What Is Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM)?

Cloud Security Posture Management is a category of security tooling that continuously monitors cloud infrastructure to identify misconfigurations, policy violations, compliance gaps, and security risks. CSPM tools connect to your cloud accounts via API, enumerate every resource in your environment, evaluate each resource's configuration against a set of security policies, and report findings that represent deviations from your defined security baseline.

The term was coined by Gartner in 2019, but the problem it addresses is as old as cloud computing itself. Organizations have always struggled with cloud misconfiguration. What changed was the scale. As enterprises moved from a handful of cloud resources to thousands of interconnected services across multiple accounts, regions, and providers, the manual review processes that worked in 2015 became completely inadequate.

What problems CSPM solves

CSPM addresses five categories of cloud security risk:

  1. Misconfiguration detection. The most fundamental capability. CSPM identifies resources that are configured in ways that violate security best practices or organizational policies -- public storage buckets, overly permissive IAM roles, unencrypted databases, disabled logging, open network ports, and thousands of other configuration states that introduce risk.

  2. Compliance monitoring. CSPM maps cloud configurations to the specific control requirements of SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, HIPAA, CIS Benchmarks, NIST 800-53, and other frameworks. This produces continuous compliance reporting rather than the point-in-time snapshots that characterize traditional audit approaches.

  3. Drift detection. Cloud environments change constantly. Engineers modify configurations, infrastructure-as-code deployments update resources, automation tools adjust settings. CSPM detects when a resource's configuration drifts from its approved baseline -- for example, when an S3 bucket that was private last week is now public, or when a security group that blocked all inbound traffic now allows SSH from 0.0.0.0/0.

  4. Visibility and asset inventory. You cannot secure what you cannot see. CSPM provides a continuously updated inventory of every cloud resource across every account, subscription, and project -- including resources that were provisioned outside of normal change management processes.

  5. Risk prioritization. Not all misconfigurations carry equal risk. A public S3 bucket containing static marketing assets is a different risk than a public S3 bucket containing customer PII. CSPM tools evaluate findings in context to help security teams focus remediation effort where it matters most.

What CSPM is not

CSPM is not a firewall, an intrusion detection system, or a runtime protection tool. It does not analyze network traffic, inspect application payloads, or protect running workloads from exploit attempts. It evaluates the configuration of cloud infrastructure -- the settings, permissions, and policies that determine how resources behave. It operates at the configuration layer, not the data plane or runtime layer.


Why Cloud Misconfigurations Are the #1 Cause of Cloud Breaches

The evidence is overwhelming and consistent across every major cybersecurity research report published in the last five years.

The 2019 Capital One breach remains the most cited example. An attacker exploited a misconfigured web application firewall to access IAM credentials, which were then used to exfiltrate 106 million customer records from S3 buckets. The root cause was not a software vulnerability or a novel attack technique. It was a misconfigured firewall rule combined with an overly permissive IAM role -- two configuration issues that a CSPM tool would have flagged immediately.

Publicly exposed S3 buckets have been responsible for some of the largest data exposures in history. In 2017, a defense contractor left classified intelligence data in a public S3 bucket. In 2018, a marketing analytics firm exposed 340 million records through a misconfigured Elasticsearch cluster. In 2020, a financial services company exposed customer records through an Azure Blob Storage container with anonymous access enabled. Why misconfigurations persist

The persistence of cloud misconfiguration is not a mystery. Several structural factors make it inevitable in environments without automated detection:

  • Scale and complexity. A single AWS account can contain hundreds of resource types, each with dozens of configuration parameters. Multi-account organizations multiply this by orders of magnitude.
  • Speed of change. Cloud environments change continuously through deployments, scaling events, and manual modifications. A configuration that was correct at deployment can drift within hours.
  • Knowledge gaps. Cloud services evolve rapidly. New features introduce new configuration parameters, and security teams cannot maintain expertise across every service in every cloud provider.
  • Shared responsibility confusion. Many organizations still believe that "running on AWS" means AWS handles security. The shared responsibility model explicitly places configuration responsibility on the customer, but this understanding does not always reach the engineers making configuration decisions.
  • Lack of visibility. In organizations without a centralized cloud security function, individual teams provision and configure resources independently. No single person or team has visibility into every configuration decision across the entire cloud estate.

How CSPM Works: Core Capabilities

CSPM tools operate through a consistent architectural pattern regardless of vendor. Understanding this pattern is essential for evaluating tools and setting realistic expectations about what CSPM can and cannot do.

Asset Discovery and Inventory

The foundation of CSPM is a complete, continuously updated inventory of every resource in your cloud environment. CSPM tools connect to cloud provider APIs (AWS APIs, Azure Resource Manager, GCP Resource Manager) using read-only credentials and enumerate every resource -- compute instances, storage buckets, databases, IAM roles, network configurations, serverless functions, container registries, DNS records, load balancers, encryption keys, and every other resource type the cloud provider exposes through its API.

This inventory is refreshed continuously -- typically every few minutes to every few hours depending on the tool and configuration. The inventory includes not just the existence of each resource but its complete configuration state: every setting, every permission, every policy document, every network rule.

Misconfiguration Detection

  • Is this S3 bucket publicly accessible?
  • Does this IAM role have wildcard permissions (Action: *, Resource: *)?
  • Is encryption at rest enabled on this RDS instance?
  • Is CloudTrail enabled and logging to a protected bucket in this AWS account?
  • Does this security group allow inbound SSH from 0.0.0.0/0?
  • Is this Azure SQL Database configured with Transparent Data Encryption?
  • Is multi-factor authentication enforced for console users?
  • Is this GCP Cloud Storage bucket using Customer-Managed Encryption Keys?
  • Are VPC Flow Logs enabled for this network?
  • Is this Kubernetes cluster running with the default service account?

Compliance Mapping

Each misconfiguration finding is mapped to the specific control requirements of relevant compliance frameworks. A single finding -- such as "S3 bucket allows public read access" -- may map to multiple controls across multiple frameworks:

Drift Detection

Drift detection monitors configuration changes over time and alerts when a resource's configuration moves from a compliant state to a non-compliant state. This is distinct from initial misconfiguration detection because it specifically identifies resources that were correctly configured and subsequently changed.

Drift is particularly dangerous because it bypasses initial security reviews. A resource that passed a security review at deployment and has been operating correctly for months can be silently modified by an engineer troubleshooting a connectivity issue, a deployment pipeline updating infrastructure, or even an automated scaling event that provisions new resources with different default settings.

Effective drift detection requires a defined baseline -- the configuration state that represents "correct" for each resource type. CSPM tools establish this baseline during initial deployment and then monitor for deviations continuously.

Advanced CSPM tools offer automated remediation -- the ability to not just detect misconfigurations but fix them automatically. CSPM vs CWPP: The critical distinction

CSPM and CWPP are the two categories most frequently confused. The distinction is fundamental:

  • CSPM evaluates how infrastructure is configured. Is the security group configured correctly? Is encryption enabled? Is the IAM policy appropriately scoped? CSPM operates at the control plane -- it reads configurations but does not observe runtime behavior.

  • CWPP evaluates what is happening inside running workloads. Is this container executing an unexpected process? Does this VM have a known vulnerability in its installed packages? Is this serverless function making suspicious API calls? CWPP operates at the data plane -- it observes runtime behavior within workloads.

A misconfigured security group is a CSPM finding. Malware executing inside an EC2 instance is a CWPP finding. You need both. Neither replaces the other.

1. Publicly Accessible Storage

The risk: Storage buckets (S3, Azure Blob, GCP Cloud Storage) configured to allow public read or write access. This is the single most common cause of large-scale data exposures. Public storage misconfigurations have exposed hundreds of millions of records across industries.

4. Network Exposure

The risk: Cloud resources with network configurations that expose them to the public internet when they should be accessible only from within the private network. This includes databases reachable from the internet, SSH ports open to all IP addresses, and management interfaces without network-level access restrictions.

  • Security groups allowing inbound access from 0.0.0.0/0 on sensitive ports (SSH 22, RDP 3389, database ports 3306/5432/1433/27017)
