Use a weighted scoring model. Evaluating SOC 2 Reports from Vendors: What to Look For (and Red Flags)
Requesting a vendor's SOC 2 report is the most efficient single step in a third-party risk assessment. A SOC 2 Type II report tells you that an independent CPA firm examined the vendor's controls over a period of time (typically 6 to 12 months) and issued a formal opinion. It is not a guarantee of security, but it is the best standardized evidence available.
What to check in every SOC 2 report
1. Report type and period. Confirm the report is Type II (covering a period, not just a point in time). Check that the observation period ended within the last 12 months. A Type I report issued three years ago is nearly worthless.
2. Scope and system description. The system description (Section III) defines what was audited. Verify that the systems and services you use are within scope. Some vendors have SOC 2 reports that cover only a portion of their product, excluding features or infrastructure you depend on.
3. Trust Service Criteria included. Most reports cover Security (Common Criteria). Check whether Availability, Confidentiality, Processing Integrity, and Privacy are also in scope -- and whether the ones relevant to your use case are covered.
